My Vertical Neighborhood, How Strangers Became a Community (IVP 2021)

This is a story about neighbors, connections and a rabbi’s good advice.

After five years of writing and rewriting and rewriting some more, my new book will launch itself into the world. Actually, a whole community of marvelous people will help launch it into the world — the neighbors who are at the heart of the story, the friends and family members who encouraged me to write, and the team of professionals at InterVarsity Press. I am profoundly grateful, excited and just a wee bit nervous. You can read some early reviews of the book here, and in Publisher’s Weekly . Ask your local bookseller to order copies or preorder from Amazon if you are in Canada or from IVP if you are in the United States.

The Bone Fields (Goose Lane Editions, 1993)

This is a book about our relationships to each other, the land, objects

In the mid-nineties, Canadian artist Dan Steeves and I sat in his living room every Saturday morning for the better part of a year. Dan would lay one of his charcoal etchings on the floor between us and I’d ask him questions. What inspired you, what’s the story you’re telling? Why this image? I recorded our conversations and distilled them into brief essays, no more than 250 words each, representative of each print. The print run on this book was small but you can still find the book online and on the shelves of second hand bookstores.
